Whenever a new restaurant opens in Oak Park, there always seems to be a warm reception with folks rushing to try it out. We decided to check out the recently opened Lake Street Kitchen + Bar and discovered this to be the case. I have to admit that we don't go out on Saturday nights very often, so I don't know if this is normal, but the place was packed.
When I first heard about the restaurant a few months ago,… Continue

The auction for the Garden Gala is available online. While you can find many interesting items, you may really be interested in the Dinning & Restaurants section! Bid today for some gift certificates to some local favorite restaurants. All proceeds are used to benefit the Oak Park Conservatory.
You don't have to attend the Garden Gala… Continue

We've been to Briejo on Harrison Street several times and always enjoyed our meal. But the one thing we always say when the check comes is, "Dang, we could have eaten in the city for that much money and made it a date night." But today, thanks to @OakParkGirl, I learned Briejo offers a $25, three-course prix fixe menu on Wednesdays. This is good to know and… Continue

I'm an Oak Park glass artist specifically seeking donations of Bombay Sapphire Gin bottles from local individuals, restaurants and bars. I have been repurposing bottles into functional as well as sculptural art objects like the bowl show… Continue

If you've been following Live Here Oak Park for a while you notice that I've been anxiously awaiting from the long-delayed opening of Chicago's Home of Chicken and Waffles (be prepared for a seductive, jazzy slow jam that plays as you navigate their Web site -- one of my pet peeves) on Madison. We've dined at the Bronzeville location in the past, so I was thrilled to hear I could get my… Continue

Okay, so not exactly, but Poor Phil's will be expanding its kitchen and dining room soon. And due to the increased kitchen capacity, they'll also be expanding their breakfast menu.
Has anyone been to Poor Phil's before? How is it? Any menu recommendations?

Today was such a great day! I was invited to check out Maya del Sol's potential new lunch menu! The company I work for, Aria Group Architects, Inc. (www.ariainc.com
) designed the interior of the restaurant and I got to know the Owners, Anon and Margi (who are also Oak Parkers) very well during that process. Look for Maya to be open on Fridays and Saturdays within the next month. It's a great atmosphere, and the outdoor patio is amazing, with lots of tables… Continue

We finally had a chance to visit the Noodles & Company in River Forest. I've been to Noodles & Company in other areas, so I knew what to expect, nevertheless, I was still eager to check them out.
Out of all of the Noodles & Company restaurants that I've been to, I have to say that the interior of this one was the nicest. I enjoyed the bright colors, high ceilings and modern/sleek fixtures.
I'm trying to eat healthier these days, so I ordered the whole… Continue

We've been speculating for weeks about what would be going into the new Pompei space
ever since the restaurant's sudden closure. The plot started to thicken recently as folks like RussM noticed construction had started in the location (check out his… Continue

It's almost that time of year again when roses, chocolate candies and greeting cards reign supreme -- Valentines Day!
If you're thinking about celebrating the holiday close to home, here are a few places offering specials menus you might want to check out:

The Depot American Diner
isn't in Oak Park, but since it's just east of Austin in Chicago, it's close enough to be a regular spot for Oak Parkers looking for great little diner for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
We went to the Depot when they first opened after seeing a segment on Metromix a few years ago. At the time, my impression was that the food (we went both for breakfast and lunch) was… Continue

In preparation for tonight's Oak Park Village Board meeting was perusing the always exciting meeting minutes from October 27 (see page 80 in the attachment below) and noticed an interesting item that caught my attention. According to the notes, it looks like an establishment called Kinderhook Tap could be taking the spot vacated by Nola's Cup on South Oak Park Avenue several months ago.…

Earlier today, the Wednesday Journal
sent out a breaking news alert
announcing that the Forest Park Pompei restaurant is now closed. Based on what it says in the article, it appears to be rather sudden:
A letter on the regional chain's corporate letterhead, addressed to "Dear guest" and signed "The Pompei Family,"… Continue

It's been a rough year for Oak Park restaurants. Just was we started talking about
the possible sale of the Szechwan Beijing restaurant, Live Here Oak Park member BJ mentioned that Taste of Brasil on South Oak Park Avenue had recently closed.
It's too bad they weren't able to last longer. They had just… Continue

This week's issue of Time Out
magazine includes the annual "100 Best Things We Ate (and drank) This Year"
list. They even made a special shout out to our very own Briejo for their "infinitely creamy, decidedly tart" cheesecake.
So I ask you, what was the best thing you ate this year in the Oak Park area?
For me, it was the mac and cheese… Continue

I came across this mysterious listing on Craigslist recently. Any guesses about what bakery is now for sale?
27 years in the making....continuously operated in the same location. This is a well establish owner operated Cafe/Bakery on a newly remodeled business center. This Cafe/Bakery serves breakfast, lunch sandwiches and oriental side dishes. 950 square foot, Eat-in 16 seat accommodation plus three sidewalk tables. Excellent Oak Park, IL… Continue

While there's plenty to keep most of us entertained in Oak Park, sometimes it's nice to take advantage to our close proximity to Chicago and head into the city.
My husband and I are huge city diners with a preference for neighborhood favorites. So last year I was thrilled to discover A La Card Chicago
. It's a pack of 52 cards for locally owned and operated Chicago restaurants. Not only does each card serve as a $10 gift… Continue

The wait is over. After much anticipation among carb-lovers in and around Oak Park, the Red Hen bakery opened its doors to the hungry public today.
I think it will only be a matter of time before Red Hen becomes a favorite lunch spot for Oak Parkers. Unlike the previous tenant at the corner of Lake and Oak Park Avenue, Red Hen has ample seating inside, plugs along the counter top lining the windows and free wi-fi coming soon.
I thought they did a great job with… Continue

This weekend, I went to Barclay's American Grill
with my husband. It's the restaurant attached to the Carlton Hotel that replaced Philanders.
The restaurant doesn't take reservations for parties smaller than five. Although they were busy we arrived, we didn't have to wait. The interior was pleasing (the kind of place that makes for a nice Saturday dinner) and selection of dishes on the menu looked… Continue

A new restaurant will be opening in the Carlton Hotel on November 2. Barclay's American Grille is described as "Classic American Cuisine with a Twist." So what exactly does that mean? Well according to the Web site, it's something like this:
Signature burgers, BBQ ribs, fresh seafood and an array of steaks and chops are prepared on our wood burning grill and served with our amazing homemade BBQ sauces and creative toppings.
