15 Emerging Leaders Present Proposals to Strengthen Oak Park, River Forest

Expanding and decreasing—perhaps better than any other word pairing, this captures the essence of project proposals set forth recently by the second graduating class of the Community Leadership Program.

Expand the coordination and potential impact of non-profit organizations…reduce the “expectation gap” between whites and minorities at the high school level…take a significant bite out of the growing obesity problem among children.

On Friday, June 17, those…

a place to call their own

Melody, Paige and Christopher are in their very own apartment. They became homeless on January 7, 2011. Four months wandering the streets by day, sleeping in a crowded shelter filled with 60 homeless men each night.

Trust me they did not enjoy themselves.

When I first saw Mel and the kids standing outside Grace episcopal Church in downtown Oak Park, IL. I was certain they would not… Continue

Bumper Sticker Beware

Hi Oak Parkers,

Something mortifying yet hilarious happened to me recently in Oak Park and I thought this might be a fun place to share it.

I park my van in the parking lot near Harlem and Lake (the one for the Gap and Pier 1) to go to the gym for a bit. I'm in the gym for about an hour-my limit-and I head out. As I'm heading across the street toward the lot, I decide to cut through the metered lot to head to my car and I can see at least three or so people standing behind… Continue

Chicago Air Show

I went to the Air Show on Saturday. The Air Show has always symbolized a great summer in Chicago. I really think it is one of the best event of the summer. Anyway, I got a few great shots I wanted to share.

If you have never been, definitely put it on your list of things to do in Chicago. Seeing the jets buzzing 100 feet off Lake Michigan and skimming the tops of the buildings on LSD is a sight to behold. The roar of the engines gives you goosebumps.…

Oak Park Bike Race

The Village should host a full on road bike race. I think it would be a great way to promote the village. As I was on a walk today, I was thinking it would be cool if there were a bike race in a criterion format through our Oak Park neighborhoods. Our tree lined street and beautiful architecture would make a good back drop for such a race. I can imagine a lot of people lining the streets with picnic baskets to watch the racers as the go by.

A criterium is a short road race on a… Continue

Oak Park Eat Up

Time for us die hard foodies to unite and have an Oak Part Eat Up. The idea is simple. We will meet at a Oak Park restaurant for some good food, convo, and of course a little alcohol. All we have to do is pick a restaurant, so give me a some suggestions. The only rule is that we should patronize an OP/FP/RF establishment.

I am proposing the following date & time:… Continue

And you thought your Monday was bad...

Snapped this photo walking to the Ridgeland station this morning. I would hate to be the guy calling this one in. "Uh, I am running a little late with the delivery, Boss..." The bridge has the height sign on it for a reason. This is probably the third time I have seen this happen at the Ridgeland stop since living in Oak Park.…

Oak Park D97 in the Tribune Today

The Chicago Tribune ran a story today about school funding and the trend of school districts increasingly turning to parents to help fill the gap in budgets. The story used Oak Park's D97 as an example a few times in the story and quoted a number of PTO officers from around the district.

Look... Up in the sky... Is it a bird? a plane? ....

I was in the parking lot near Petco in River Forest and was late for lunch at the Blue Max with my daughter and her mother and her aunt, who was visiting from England, when I saw something to the east in the sky over Oak Park so I stopped to take some pictures which will appear somewhere either in this blog or elsewhere in "Live Here" when I figure out how to upload them.

When I got to Blue Max my phone was ringing. I figured it was my daughter wanting to know where I was. I couldn't… Continue
