New Shelters At Ridgeland Greenline Stop

I noticed today at the Green Line Ridgeland stop that the there is a new bus shelter for the riders!  Lovely!

It used to be somewhat of a pain to have to wait at the curb for the bus as there was no where to sit.  Often times, bus riders would just stand around indoors at the train station waiting on the bus.  Now we have these nice little shelters.   You can't see it in the photo, but there is a bench to sit down on too.   These must have been put up very recently as they were still…

Green Line Cars About to Get Fancy!

I just read an online article from the Oak Leaves stating that the CTA will be testing their new 5000-series prototype cars on the Green Line starting on Monday. Based on the info I available on the CTA website, one of the most noticeable features of the new car are the seats which will face… Continue

CTA Has No Love for the Green or Blue Line

Last night the CTA held an Open House to discuss plans to rehab the Red Line and Purple Line stations from Addison to Linden. Here's what it said on the CTA website:

Customers Invited to Share Ideas for Future Improvements The Chicago Transit Authority is undertaking a study of the Red Line North and Purple Line – from the Addison Red Line station to Linden on the Purple Line – that will provide guidance for doing major…

CTA Fare Hikes May be on the Way

Since I drive to the burbs every day, I don't feel the pain of CTA fare increases on a regular basis but an item in the Chicago Tribune caught my eye since it impacts hundreds of Oak Parkers who take the Green and Blue Lines every day.

As usual, the CTA is facing a budget shortfall . In addition to reducing the frequency of numerous bus routes, the CTA's… Continue

Metra Phobia

I read a interesting blog post yesterday by Mike Doyle, a.k.a Chicago Carless, about a recent experience he and a friend had with an discourteous Metra conductor during a trip to the city from Oak Park. His post got me thinking about Metra and my own feelings about it.

Personally, I'm not a huge Metra fan even though the ride is exponentially more pleasant than taking the CTA. The only… Continue

Could You Go Without a Car in the Oak Park Area?

Yesterday, the commuting gods made a point to punish me with a double whammy of bad luck. On my way to work, my tire shredded itself into a mess of burned rubber. A good Samaritan was nice enough to stop and help me put on my spare. Then, as I was on my way home for my wedding anniversary dinner, the commuting gods stuck again, leaving me with a flat spare tire 20 minutes away from my house.

So for the next few days, we’ll be a one car household, which will be a little… Continue

Will Cameras Make the Green Line Safer?

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the CTA is planning to install high-resolution security cameras at all train stations. Th good news for Oak Park is that the Green Line is at the top of the list. The Trib reports:

Looking for a fun and trendy suburb of Chicago? Check out Oak Park, IL!

Oak Park is a vibrant, diverse suburb just west of Chicago. It is a very pedestrian and bicycle-friendly community with access to the CTA via multiple blue and green line stops as well as a Metra station. The downtown area is very lively with many shops and restaurants. There are also smaller neighborhood "shopping districts" with boutiques, art galleries, coffee shops, restaurants, and the occasional bar/lounge. There are several parks and playgrounds scattered throughout the village as well.… Continue
