Profile Information

Favorite thing about living in the Oak Park area
The people, trees, architecture, and diversity of residents. I feel like I am living in a small town with just enough touch of hipness.
Least favorite thing about living in the Oak Park area
Property taxes can be a bit much and I think the Village needs to be a little more radical and proactive in revitalizing downtown. There seems to be too much focus and appeasement of special interest groups.
Interests & Hobbies
RC Cars, Sci-fi, and traveling. I am the old guy with the toy car buzzing up and down at 40mph the street.
Favorite local restaurant
Any restaurant that isn't an Italian restaurant (I'm not a pasta fan).
Favorite local shop or business
Trader Joes and Fly Bird

"Statistically, crime is lower.  However, because news is so instantaneous, you hear more stories and it makes it feel like there is more crime.  Unfortunately, this is a consequence of the 24 hour instantaneous news cycle. With that said,…"

Russ M commented on Becca's blog post Website Ranks Oak Park Among the Best Small Cities For Education
"I think the methodology looks at how much the district spends on kids.  While that is certainly a good measure, I think it can also be a bit misleading to some degree too since you would also really need to look at spending relative to test…"

Russ M replied to tmerle's discussion Is Scoville Park a good place to watch the Oak Park 4th of July fireworks?
"Interesting question.  I'd imagine you can see the fireworks from Scoville.  I've only attended them at OPRF, so can't say for sure."

Undercover OP Police in a Lexus?

This morning on the way to work, I saw a driver get pulled over at Ridgeland & South Boulevard by a grey Lexus IS250 with flashing police lights.  It kind of took me by surprise.

I think the driver was pulled over because they were driving in the parking lane.  They tried to pass on the right under the El tracks at the stop light.  You know how impatient Chicago drivers like to snake to the front of the line at a stop light on the right hand side and then drag race off…

New Shelters At Ridgeland Greenline Stop

I noticed today at the Green Line Ridgeland stop that the there is a new bus shelter for the riders!  Lovely!

It used to be somewhat of a pain to have to wait at the curb for the bus as there was no where to sit.  Often times, bus riders would just stand around indoors at the train station waiting on the bus.  Now we have these nice little shelters.   You can't see it in the photo, but there is a bench to sit down on too.   These must have been put up very recently as they were still…

Galloping Ghost - Cool Place for Kids (And Adults...)

I just thought I would share some information about a cool place I found yesterday in Brookfield called Galloping Ghost Arcade.  If you were a kid in the 70s and 80s, you will think you have gone back in time.

It is a video game arcade, but it only has the old school video games we grew up on - Pac-man, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Punch Out, Galaga, Space Invaders, Super Mario Brothers, Tron, etc.   All…

What is Your Hobby?

I am really curious to hear about LiveHere member hobbies. Having a hobby is a great way to release stress.  I am guessing some of you knit, program computers, garden, cook, photography, etc.   So what do you do in your spare time for fun?

I have two hobbies that I really enjoy.  The main one that takes up most of my free time now is racing remote control 1/8th scale off road cars.  I race them all over IL, MI, and WI now.  The cars are typically gas powered…

Potato Soup with Bacon

I cooked this tonight and thought I would share it with everyone.  It was Delicious...  with a capital D.   It is soup mostly of potatoes, corn, red bell peppers, chives, and leeks.

Of course, I had to throw some nice bacon goodness on top.  I highly suggest you go all out on the bacon and get the Black Forest Bacon from the meat counter at Whole Foods.  Trust me, that regular ole Jimmy Dean bacon will just seem so inadequate after you've had this Black…

Russ,
thanks...that's been the joke for awhile when people ask about "what is it about your cookies??!?!"...I think it's really that they're just made with the stuff we should all be eating...no unpronouncable ingredient names....
if you come by the market again, make sure to say hi!
