Yes, I'm going to be working in Oak Brook. I'm trying to figure out where I want to live. I start work on the 22nd, and I'm driving up this weekend to find an apartment. So far, when I ask where to live in Chicago I'm told that since I'm 24 I should live in Lincoln Park. However, most of these people aren't facing a commute to Oak Brook. They can just take public transportation downtown. I've been told it takes 40 minutes to get from Oak Brook to Lincoln Park, but I'm starting to think I'm being lied to. Oak Park seems to be a happy medium between the two. I'd love to live in the city, but I honestly don't think I could afford that much gas every week. It seems a little nuts to me especially since I'm used to walking four blocks to my office in Savannah. There doesn't appear to be any simple public transportation to Oak Brook either.

What are the best ways to get to the city on the weekends? I'm reading that the L isn't safe at night. Is this true? Are the opinions basically to drive or take a taxi? I'd like to stay close enough that the city is still very accessible. My biggest concern is that I don't know anyone in Chicago, and if I live too far out from the "young areas" (Lincoln Park and the loop), I'm never going to meet anyone. I don't want to be stuck in area mostly populated by families and couples.

I appreciate all the help. This site has really helped me make some decisions about where to live!

Hi Lisa, thanks for joining the site! I see from your conversation with Yasmeen that your going to be working in Oak Brook, is that correct? I work in Oak Brook now. We used to live on the North Side of the city and the commute was killing me (sometimes an hour and a half). The drive from Oak Park is definitely a lot easier!

I look forward to chatting with you.

Thank you! I'm having reservations about moving to Lincoln Park. I'm used to walking four blocks to my office in historic Savannah so an hour or more seems a bit much from the city. Everyone keeps giving me different commute times, so I'm glad to find someone who actually makes the drive everyday. I'll more than likely be moving there in a week! I really appreciate your help.

Congrats on your new job. In my opinion, it is better to live in Oak Park or Forest Park and commute to Oak Brook than drive from the city to Oak Brook. If you are looking for a place with a great personality, strong arts community, and rich history, Oak Park is a great place to live. The commute isn't too bad. Depending on where you live in Oak Park it can take 20-30 minutes to get to Oak Brook and a little longer to get home. Good luck on your move and your new job.
