Great group. I am new to Oak Park as well to the vegan lifestyle. Due to health issues my herbalist wants me to cut out all dairy, meat, wheat, and soy. I am switching slowly and the more alternatives I can find the easier the switch. So far I love almond, hemp, and rice milk. Lara bars are a lifesaver for junk cravings. I eat a lot of salads now. I'm looking forward to getting ideas for food now that I am eating to live!!

Angela - I'd love to know how to make my own almond mylk. And the tart you showed above with the leftover paste too. :D Please post the recipe when you get a chance. Thanks!

Yeah, definitely a winner in my book. I've been raving about it. Rich food though. I didn't feel the urge to eat until about 2:00 pm the following day. But I *had* to have the leftovers when I did eat again. ;)

I just drove past there yesterday and said to my wife that we should try that place. I'm not vegan, just vegetarian, but I'm always down for a creative vegan meal. Awesome.

Swati, that is awesome. I had no idea that Cafe Laguardia could be so vegan friendly. Now I must go and see about that coconut ice cream.

My husband and I went to Cafe Laguardia West on Fri eve, just stumbled across the place (we're still new to OP) and thought we'd try it out. My husband ordered a sampler sort of platter and I explained to the waitress that I didn't eat meat, fish or dairy, and she said she'd have the chef put together a nice platter for me. Man, it *was* nice! Yuca, plantains (two preparations!), guacamole, vegetarian rice, veggies. I was pleased! And then, the chef sent over another dish for me! Fried yuca balls with a red plantain center, smothered in this tasty, creamy, coconut sauce. It was so, so delicious. I thought it couldn't get any better, but then they brought out vegan coconut ice cream. Mmm... so, so good. What a wonderful surprise! So often I go to regular restaurants, and just find a salad or fries or something to eat - filling, sure but not necessarily satiating. My experience at Laguardia was incredible! Will surely be going back! Just thought I'd spread the word to fellow vegans in OP!!

yes. goji berries are sold dried like raisins. They are a beautiful red orange color. Another way i like to eat them i add them in trail mix. A serving is about a handful. You could buy as much or as little as you want since they are sold by the lb at whole foods. So the next time you stop by the store next to the bakery where they sell all the seeds and nuts try a goji berry see if you like them.

Hey Angela, those goji berries sound interesting. Are they dried like raisins?

my recommendations for this season when people are falling ill left and right, is goji berries. They sell them at whole foods. I sprinkle them in my oatmeal or cereal they taste great in smoothies and salads. They taste sweet like black raisins and are a super food. A high antioxidant that combats the free radicals in our bodies. I find myself a lot healthier this winter. Yesterday I was sick and fighting off a cold real bad i ate a serving of goji berries drank water like crazy and woke up healthy and feeling great. No runny nose, sneezing, cold sweats, or coughing. Be healthy oak park and feed your body pure fuels it will thank you! Im not claiming goji berries as a miracle cure for the cold but I am saying that eating healthy and drinking lots of water helps a lot.
