I agree - we definitely would have contacted animal control if I was with my husband. Unfortunately, my husband was alone when this happened and his first priority was to keep our dog safe and bring him home as quickly as possible. Our dog was shaking like a leaf after the attack so it was not possible to stick around, figure out where the girl lives, and contact animal control.

If a dog bites someone or is not sufficiently controlled get their name if possible and report them to animal control. They do do follow ups about dangerous dogs.

Thanks Becca. Your story sounds pretty scary as well. Small dogs are funny that way - overcompensating for their size. :-)

Shakes is much better tonight.

@Yasmeen I'm glad Shakes and your husband weren't hurt. Once I intercepted a loose pit bull at Taylor Park. It was a different situation (he apparently was riding in a car and jumped out the window) but he ran straight for us after dodging some cars in the street. I was so worried that he would get hit, I forgot I should be scared that a pit bull was charging toward me. Luckily, I was able to scoop Brownie up before she got scared and grab the other dog's leash until his owner showed up. But if I hadn't picked up Brownie so fast she probably would have chomped at him and got herself into trouble.

We've now had our second incident in one year where a dog was walking a too-small kid and ran after our poodle-mix, Shakespeare. This time it was worse - my husband was walking Shakes in Taylor Park when a very large lab came charging at them. Luckily, my husband managed to protect our dog in his arms while the large dog repeatedly jumped up to bite Shakespeare. He did manage to bite my husband on the arm - fortunately, my husband was wearing a leather jacket.

This dog was being walked by a seven year old that was very clearly out-sized by her non-balanced, non-socialized dog. Parents? No where in sight.

I am guessing the parents probably felt their child was safe because she was accompanied by this large, dangerous dog but I have to ask - how safe are the rest of the people in the park? If it was me walking the dog, I could have been knocked off my feet and Shakes could have been hurt quite badly. Even in the best case, Shakes was visibly shaken tonight and had to be carried home.

My husband doesn't want to bring the dog back to Taylor Park. I can't blame him - I have seen a lot of people letting their dogs off leash in the park and have always been afraid something would happen.

Hey Danielle, have you tried the Forest Park dog park by the highway? We've only gone once because our dog doesn't like to socialize, but would have definitely gone back if she had played more.

The Oak Park Animal Care League is now a member of the site. They've formed a group and posted an upcoming event called Jammin for the Animals.
