Live Here Oak Park

An online community for people living in and around Oak Park, Illinois.

Hi All,
Some new Oak Parkians with a big heart adopted a Japanese Chin from a rescue organization, because the puppy mill deemed it not fit for sale and was going to drown it. Don't get me started on puppy mills!

Anyway, it has some health issues, part of the reason it was almost tossed in the trash. Apparently it needs a $1,300 eye surgery to save its vision, and it's only 6 months old. It's too late for insruance as this is a pre-existing condition, but is there anything else they can look into? Like a medical discount plan? They moved here to save money (they HAD been on Michigan Ave), and $1,300 is something they'd be saving up a LONG time for. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know what schools are around with a vet program, but when I was in Atlanta, it was work the 2 hour drive to Athens to take animals to the UGA vet school for surgery. So, if you know what colleges have vet schools, they are typically going to have the best pricing.

Poor little guy. We took our dog to Michigan State for surgery, not necessarily because it was cheap, but because they have a state-of-the art animal hospital. I don't know how their prices would compare for something like the surgery you mentioned, but it might be worth investigating.
