Since Aripos is going to be opening soon on Marion Street and their specialty is arepas, I thought I'd ask the question -- so what is an arepa?

Courtesy of Wikipedia:

The arepa is a flat, unleavened patty made of cornmeal which can be grilled, baked, or fried. The characteristics of the arepa vary from region to region: It may vary by color, flavor, size, thickness, garniture, and also the food it may be stuffed with. Arepa is a native bread made of ground corn, water, and salt which is fried into a pancake-like bread. It is either topped or filled with meat, eggs, tomatoes, salad, cheese, shrimp, or fish.

My personal definition: Sounds like yummy goodness.

Brian, you gave a very good definition what the Arepa is. To add to your posting, the Arepa is considered by all Venezuelans as the "every-day-bread"; it’s the type of food that you can enjoy at any time of the day. The Arepa is the faithful companion of many Venezuelan dishes. And when it comes to the fillings, well let's just say that the sky is the limit. In Venezuela, some of the most popular fillings for the Arepas are shredded beef or chicken, pork, beans, cheese, minced fish, and an avocado-chicken salad commonly known as “Reina Pepiada”.

We look forward to bringing the Arepa, and many other Venezuelan dishes to Oak Park. We can’t wait for all of you become “Arepa Lovers”.

Does look tasty. Looking forward to the opening as we could use a little variety around here. Not that my gut needs such a tasty looking sandwich.

I am glad that everyone is getting excited about Aripo's because we can't wait! I just wanted to add that I have seen a lot of posts about the lack of vegetarian dishes, I wanted to let everyone know that as a vegetarian myself and in the process of opening a restaurant we are going to give Oak Park that option! Also, arepas are GLUTEN FREE another great perk of this fabulous cuisine.
