I'm considering summer camp for my children through Oak Park Park District. Any positive or negative experiences? I'm specifically considering Junior Camp Acorn at Rehm that includes a swim lesson. My daughter is four so she would be one of the younger ones.

I've heard good things about Junior Camp Acorn, but I haven't tried it because I'm gunshy after our experience with the Kiddie Kamp (for 3-4 year olds). My daughter, who always loves any new class or activity, started crying the second week and said she didn't want to go anymore. So I stayed behind the next time I dropped her off, and saw that the teenaged counselors yelled at the kids constantly, and the campers barely went outside at all. Two of my friends' kids had the same experience at different Kiddie Kamp sessions too. I took my complaint up to the Park District director in order to get my money back.

So that's my long-winded way of saying don't send the 4-year-old to the Kiddie Kamp. :)

We had a total opposite experience at Kiddie Camp at Field Center. The counselors were great and very receptive to the kids. My daughter and a couple of her buddies loved it and one of the counselors has since done some babysitting. I guess it depends on the counselors. Lottery is tomorrow so I guess I have to decide. I do like that they'll refund your money so maybe I just have to take the chance!

I know it's past the registration lottery deadline, so this may be a moot point, but...
my daughter did jr. camp acorn when she was 5 and 6, 3 days/week, and loved it. The swim lessons were good,
the counselors were pretty friendly and helpful and the games and crafts were pretty good. Rehm is very close
to our house, which was a plus.

My favorite swim classes were from the high school. OPRF does a great job. Their swim team members are the instructors and the ratio is 1 instructor to 2 or 3 children, tops. I have even seen 1 to 1 lessons going on.

My son has done the Start Smart Sport Camp and he loved it. A friend of his was in one of the camps with swimming lessons and two of the children were left at the pool (this was last year.) Her mother pulled her out, as did a few other parents. The counselors were younger and not very responsible, per my son's friend's mother.
