Help with After School Care
Hello,
I thought I'd try a shout out to liveHereOakPark, for some advice.
We recently moved to Oak Park, both work, and have a son starting at Beye (K) in 12 days. We were on a waiting list for Hephzibah, but weren't able to get in.
Any help out there out what to do with our son until we get home?
I heard there's a YMCA program - but its on the other side of town (we live off Austin), and we work downtown, so its not in a great location for us, but we'd do it if that was the only option. What do you know about the YMCA program?
Another alternative is getting sitters. Logistically, it sounds difficult, especially if you rely on one or two sitters.
Any other ideas?

We too are moving to Oak Park in the next few months and will be looking for childcare options as well.
The current owners of the house we're buying sent me what seems to be an amazing resource in this regard: the mom mail list.
Mom Mail FAQs
They also sent me a sample list from a couple of years ago, and pretty much every type of childcare seems to be accounted for. People who need help from 5-7am while they train for triathalons, people who need pickups and dropoffs from school--everything.
When our move date comes closer, we'll be looking and posting to this list.

Mom Mail is a great resource. We have a son starting K at Beye this year also. Our older son will be in 3rd.

This is hot topic for all of us starting K this year and there is little to no information provided by the school district, everything seems to be word of mouth. I know that River Forest CC has a program, but they don't come to our side of town (we'll be starting at Whittier). The Park District also has a program at Mann and one other, but no transportation is provided from other schools. There is a new program coming after winter break that I'll have more info on soon, but that doesn't help for now. Concordia is starting a new program, but only 20 kids, so call them now if you are interested. Other than the Y, sitters is really the only other option I am hearing. It seems that with so much demand, there would be more options, but that is not what I've found.

The early childhood center at Concordia University just started an after school care program. They also provide transportation if necessary.

The Wednesday Journal publish a community guide of childcare options every year. It has a lot of listings. You can find it here. Some of it is irrelevant for what you need (pre-schools and such) but should be helpful.

Thanks everyone - our son is at the Y right now - we signed up for a month. The bus takes him directly from Beye to the Y, but so far he's telling us he doesn't like it. He says they (folks at the Y) yell too much at the kids, for no reason... He might change his opinion in the coming days, but we'll be looking at other options for sure. thanks for your suggestions.

Hello everyone!
My name is Lily Kennedy, I am twenty years old and looking for a babysitting job. I am free Mondays from 11am-3pm, Tuesdays/Thursday 1am-3pm, Wednesday as early in the morning till 3pm, and Friday I am free all day! I can also babysit any night of the weekends. I have been babysitting for Oak Park and River Forest families my whole life so I am very experienced. I have my own car so transportation will not be an issue, and I have plenty of references. Not yet. My son is still lukewarm about the Y, we're getting MomMail , but there seems to be a shortage of sitters avaialable M-F 3-5 pm. We'll keep trying.
