Live Here Oak Park

An online community for people living in and around Oak Park, Illinois.

I've had great success in the past on the Live Here Oak Park website asking you all for recommendations regarding local businesses. Today, I wanted to take a minute to recognize a local business that really impressed me.

While the category listed for this discussion is "Spread the Word: Tell Folks About Your Local Business", I think it's more appropriate to share the positive experiences we've had with other businesses. (After all, I'm guessing most business owners think their own business is pretty great!)

If you're in the market for an eye doctor, I'd recommend you look no further than Compass Eye Care and Dr. Al Licup.

It is clear from the moment you meet Al that he is passionate about what he does and within a few moments of speaking with him, you'll see Al clearly is committed in his craft. While so many relationship based businesses have been commoditized, Al and his staff really take the time to get to know you and put what can be complex concepts into easy to understand terms. You walk out feeling educated and taken care of, not lectured to and spoken at.

Here's my Yelp review from our initial visit with Compass Eye Care.

If you've had a great experience with a local business and would like to share it here as well, feel free to do so!

I had a great experience at the Competitive Foot a few months ago. I was in the market for some new running shoes. The saleswoman was very helpful and attentive. She measured my feet (which most stores hardly ever due) and suggested I try a pair of Nike running shoes because they're good for people with narrow feet. Sure enough, they fit like a glove and I'm eternally grateful. I will certainly be going back when I'm due for another pair.

I had a great experience at Divine Consign (Quality Eco-Chic Home Furnishings Revisited). We strolled in last weekend, just for a quick dekho and ended up strolling out with "new" dining room furniture! I interacted mainly with Kellie, but both ladies staffing the store were very pleasant and helpful. We had a similar experience when we visited their sister store the Annex a few doors down.

We got a great deal on our set, but this was my first time visiting, so I'm not positive about the pricing. I think if it wasn't for the sale, the dining set might've been a little expensive to get. That being said, they have a very innovating pricing structure (explained thusly on their website - Items remain the full sale price for three weeks. After three weeks, the items will be marked down 20% for another three weeks. After six weeks the items will be marked down 40% from the original sales price.) Delivery was for a nominal fee, and the delivery staff was courteous and helpful.

All in all, it was a very positive experience dealing with Divine Consign! I highly recommend the store, especially if you're on the market for furniture and accessories, but just drop in otherwise too!

I have had several great experiences at Oak Park Jewelers. They have done everything from clean my engagement ring to help me pick out the perfect watch. I was thrilled when I found our wedding bands there. I highly recommend them for anything related to your jewelery.

I second Suzy. I've gone to Oak Park Jewelers to restring my pearls and other beads for years and they do a great job.

I would also like to put in a good word for Forest Agency, on Chicago Ave near Marion St. We've used them for years for homeowners and auto insurance. Their customer service always exceeds my expectations. Lou Bradley has the patience of a saint dealing with my questions and checking various options at renewal and is extremely detail-oriented as well.

Brian,
Thanks for posting this. What a great idea.

I love shopping and dining locally and as much as we can, we choose small businesses over the chains. Here are a few of my favorites...

Botanica - My favorite place to buy gifts and occasional gifts for myself. It's a great shop to find vintage prints and bring the garden feel into the house. The owner is very friendly and helpful. http://www.botanica.biz/

Scratch 'n Sniff - The best dog store I've found. The owner is incredibly thoughtful in picking out the food, snacks, harnesses, toys. She also helped us solve the mystery of our dog rejecting his food. The best part? Our dog, Shakespeare loves going there. He guides us right in the door. They also have the best dog halloween costumes. scratchnsniff.biz

I really have never liked going to the dentist, but Dr. Yee at 1010 Lake Street makes it a much more pleasant experience. Extremely passionate about his craft and always full of energy, Dr. Yee really takes the time to get to know you and takes great care of you.

Dr. Yee is great at identifying possible issues and taking a "wait and see" approach rather than being quick to recommend corrective action that may or may not be needed in the future.

If you're in the market for a dentist, I'd recommend you pay Dr. Yee a visit. You'll be glad you did.

Here's his Yelp page (including my review from last year).

Thanks so much Swati for your positive feedback of Divine Consign. You did a great job explaining our consignment process! We have truly enjoyed establishing our business in the community and getting to know so many great customers and consignors. We are always looking for feedback so we can continue to provide the best possible experience for our guests!

Earlier this week, I went into Fitzgerald's Fine Stationery looking for some help with paper choices. I am a designer and am working with a bride to custom design her save-the-dates and invitations. Even knowing that I was only buying paper and envelopes, the owner Colleen, was SUPER helpful and really went out of her way to get me what I needed. She even suggested ordering samples of things my bride might like which she didn't have on hand in the store. I'm so glad I went in there rather than going to a big chain like Michael's or something. And, the bride loved the choices so much, I'll be visiting the store to make the big purchase soon.

I recently hired It's A Sign to produce a banner for the Oak Park Tennis Center on Harlem & Lake in Oak Park.

Kim Rasmussen, the president of It's A Sign, came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Kim did a great job explaining my options and cost. She helped me make a good decision that worked best for our needs and our budget.

If you're in the market for a banner or sign, I'd highly recommend It's A Sign.
