Hi - I am new to the area and wanted to plan a fun night out with my husband. Any suggestions? I was hoping to do something more than just have dinner -- something creative, active and fun!

Great topic. Becca and I went to Jazzin' at the Shedd Aquarium last night. It was really fun. They have live jazz playing and you can get booze and snacks while you look at the fish. It is capped off by an unbelievable view of the city and fireworks.

Welcome to the area, Lisa. My wife and I also checked out Jazzin' at the Shedd Aquarium last night (with a Groupon special, it was a very good deal) and I second the recommendation by Russ.

If you're looking for something local to Oak Park / River Forest / Forest Park, House Red is a great local wine shop on Madison Street in Forest Park hosts a lot of different tasting events.

Thursday Night Out in Oak Park is also a fun event to check out and a great way to visit a lot of the local restaurants while taking in some good music as well.

Those are just a few that come to mind. If you're looking for something more specific, feel free to let us know and I'm sure someone here can point you in the right direction.
Highly recommend the cooking classes at Flavour on Madison in Forest Park as well. We did a class at House Red and it was fun which saying something since we aren't huge wine drinkers.

You also can't go wrong with classes at Marion Street Cheese Market.
Hi Lisa, hopefully you're getting some good ideas! We had a similar discussion last year on the site. Check it out.
Tonight we took a bike ride around Oak Park and stopped at the Pasta Shoppe to eat outside. Lots of great, quiet streets with beautiful architecture to admire.

If you like to bike ride, you may want to check out Fox River's bike trail in Geneva & St. Charles. It's pretty far West but definitely worth checking out on the weekend.

My husband and I are launching a local opera company with our first production, La Boheme in August:

Welcome!

There's always the city, where there are so many free events. If you go to the city's homepage, you can sign up for various newsletters for things going on at Grant Park. I think next week Phil and I are going to the gypsy dancing, where they give you dance lessons first and then let you rip up the rug (grass?), dancing to live music. You can probably find that under a search for "Chicago's Summer Dance". Phil and I also go to the free concerts in Grant Park (their concert series is wonderful).

In and around Oak Park: Marion Street frequently has live music with or after dinner, and that's always good. Fitzgerald's is always lively and has a rich music history (and a few movies were filmed there, too--The Color of Money, A League of Their Own). We've also gone to some art gallery openings. And there's also the 16th Street Theater in Berwyn.

Have a great summer!
Oh, and Lisa: I'll second Brian on GROUPON. We use them all the time and it's been a terrific way to get to know the city, and a great way to experience dining, spa services, exercise classes, etc., all at discounted rates. We recently did several tours, too, around the city, such as a Chicago Film Tour/Bus Ride, The Architecture Tour of the River, Tall Ship Windy, Dinner Cruise, etc.
This is a great date night in Oak Park. It's private cooking lessons w/a charming chef. You cook and eat the food with a small group of other people. http://www.meetup.com/Tommaso-Private-Cooking-Class/
He also hosts a panini night http://www.meetup.com/panini/
Ah, for the days before kids.
